#ArtBasel | My Top 4 Must See Satellite Art Fairs + Info on VIP Access

I know you've heard. Art Basel is all the rage.

For the novice, Basel season can be exciting, yet overwhelming. No sweat, my pet! Let me make life easier for you. Here's the run down of my top 4 must-see satellite shows during Art Basel/ Miami Art Week.

Please note, I'm partial to Wynwood and the Miami Design District over Miami Beach during Basel... and pretty much any other time of the year, actually.

Art Africa

By some odd twist of fate, I missed the inaugural Art Africa show last year, but that won't happen again this year. You'll see me traipsing through several Art Africa events this Basel season. Here's the intel on this satellite fair:

"TheUrbanCollective and the City of Miami, SEOPW CRA gear up to present a top-notch line-up of the most exquisite contemporary artwork from Africa and its Diaspora during 2nd annual Art Africa Miami Arts Fair. With a pavilion themed around the art and culture of the African Diaspora and housed in a grand 8,000 square foot exhibition tent adjacent to the Lyric Theatre at 919 NW 2nd Ave. Miami, FL , the Miami Arts Fair will fare like no other Art Basel event. The Art Africa Miami Arts Fair is the first comprehensive fair to debut within Art Basel in some time and the first of its kind to feature the art of the African Diaspora exclusively."

Red Dot Miami

I have attended the Red Dot Art Fair for the last two seasons and this contemporary art show has been without a doubt one of my favs. A staple in the Wynwood/ Midtown area of Miami, this show will not disappoint. Take a look at my Red Dot coverage from 2010. Here's the intel on this satellite fair:

"Red Dot Fair strives to create a fair for galleries specializing in emerging, mid-career and established artists that present work of lasting value. Under the direction of Red Dot owner George Billis, approximately 70 international modern and contemporary art galleries will feature painting, photography and works on paper. Red Dot Fair will again present a one-thousand square foot sculpture garden, showcasing outstanding large-scale indoor and outdoor sculptures created by prominent modern artists from around the world. This year Red Dot will also debut Solo Projects – a solo section featuring smaller booths for single artist project."

SCOPE Miami, Soul of Miami Coverage.

OK, OK. So, I never attended an actual SCOPE show, but I have gone to several of their after parties and if those shindigs are any indication, the actual SCOPE art show will be magnificent. Here's the intel on this satellite fair:

"Long-established as the preeminent launching pad for emerging contemporary art, SCOPE recognizes the significant cultural impact of VH1’s You Oughta Know Initiative, which exposes new musical talent worldwide. Through a series of curatorial collaborations on-air, online and on-site in Miami, SCOPE and VH1 are teaming up to celebrate and amplify the creativity of emerging visual art. Returning to Miami with a new location on the most highly-trafficked gateway to the Midtown Arts District, SCOPE Miami’s monumental pavilion will be accompanied by The VH1 Outdoor Lounge, located at N.E. 36th St and Midtown Blvd. The premier destination to discover new talent in music, art and beyond, the VH1 Outdoor Lounge will be accessible to all SCOPE visitors for the duration of the fair, December 4 – 9, 2012."

Art Miami, Soul of Miami Coverage.

Don't ask me how, but I've managed to attend this show for the last two years as well. Two words, LOVED IT. If you are into the modern,  contemporary international, you must pay your respects. Take a look at my Art Miami coverage from 2010. Here's the intel on this satellite fair:

"World-famous for its stylish gallery-like decor, its outstanding quality and extraordinary variety, Art Miami showcases the best in modern and contemporary art from more than 125 international art galleries. This year, Art Miami will be joined by its new sister art fair, CONTEXT Art Miami, focusing on emerging and cutting-edge contemporary art featuring 65 of the world’s most prestigious galleries in an elegant pavilion directly adjacent to Art Miami, creating a virtual “city of art” for the thousands of collectors, dealers, curators, and artists from around the globe that descend upon Miami."

All you need now is a sugar free Red Bull. Happy Basel!
